I live in Japan and my town was hit pretty bad by the earthquake last Friday. After walking home from school (1 1/2 hrs) I came home to find my apartment wrecked, my doors broken, and my cat, Hobo, gone. I feared that he was gone for good after he didn’t come back that night or the next morning. I searched for hours for him with my boyfriend, Kris, and a couple of my friends when we had no power, water, or energy. Asked neighbors if they had seen an orange cat with a blue collar and they pointed me in so many different directions.
I finally just burst down crying that Hobo was gone for good, and I was heartbroken. My friends tried to cheer me up by staying with me and Kris. We played cards by candlelight and tried to cheer ourselves up by talking about childhood memories, when all of a sudden I heard a weak meow from outside.
I immediately called out for Hobo and flew open the now partially fixed door, Kris was telling me not to get my hopes up because it might not be him (he was completely heartbroken by Hobo’s disappearance too and even blamed himself for not being home at his regular time—before the quake hit). I didn’t see anything at first because of how dark it was without power in our city. I felt like I was slowly losing my mind.
Then all of a sudden, my little orange fury came crawling out of the bushes, meowing, straight into my arms. Kris and I hugged him between us and we both started crying in front of our friends.
Out of all of the sadness of this entire event, nothing has brightened my day more than seeing his little face when I thought all hope was lost.
